De gouverneur van de staat is Sergio Garrido.
Economie
In koloniale tijden was Barinas vooral actief met cacao, tabak en veeteelt. Tegenwoordig zorgen maïs, sorghum, rijst, koffie, cacao, aardolie en veeteelt voor werkgelegenheid.
