This file is a faithful representation of a medallion mosaic inside the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls which includes the portraits of all the Popes of the Catholic Church since the 1st century. For almost all of those mosaics, the authors are presumably unknown and the mosaics itself date back to circa 1850 (reconstruction of the basilica under the pontificate of Pius IX). As such they fall in the public domain. See popechart.com for documentation.
Note: This template should not be used either for the images of those mosaics whose author –and their death date– is known (use {{PD-old}} instead) and for the most recent medallions, as the latter may still be protected by copyright.

De situatie rond het auteursrecht van dit werk is in theorie onzeker. Volgens de wetgeving van het land waar dit werk is gemaakt rust er auteursrecht op dit werk tot 70 jaar na het overlijden van de maker; het is echter niet bekend wanneer de maker van dit werk is overleden. Het werk is echter meer dan 120 jaar geleden gemaakt. Daarom is het redelijk om aan te nemen dat het auteursrecht - ten tijde van het plaatsen van het sjabloon met deze melding - was vervallen. (U kunt hier de gevoerde discussie over dit onderwerp nalezen). Gebruik dit sjabloon niet als de overlijdensdatum van de maker van het werk wél bekend is.

Dit werk bevindt zich in het publiek domein in de Verenigde Staten omdat het gepubliceerd werd (of geregistreerd bij de U.S. Copyright Office) voor 1 januari 1930.

 Merk op dat enkele landen een auteursrechtentermijn hebben die langer is dan 70 jaar: Mexico heeft een termijn van 100 jaar, Jamaica 95 jaar, Colombia 80 jaar, en Guatemala en Samoa 75 jaar. Deze afbeelding kan mogelijk zich niet in het publiek domein bevinden in deze landen, die bovendien niet de regel van de kortere termijn hanteren. Auteursrechten kunnen langer berusten op werken gemaakt door Fransen die voor Frankrijk stierven in de Tweede Wereldoorlog (meer informatie), Russen die dienden aan het oostfront van de Tweede Wereldoorlog (bekend als de Grote Patriottische Oorlog in Rusland) en postuum gerehabiliteerde Russen (meer informatie).
Van dit bestand is vastgesteld dat er geen bekende auteursrechtaanspraken op rusten, alle aanverwante en naburige rechten daarbij inbegrepen.
Reproducties van het werk kunnen ook worden beschouwd als publiek domein omdat ze geen oorspronkelijk karakter hebben. Dit geldt voor reproducties gemaakt in de Verenigde Staten (zie Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp.), Duitsland en veel andere landen.
